Past perfect or simple

Why did you invite him to your house? (talking about an event that happened 5 years ago)
Because when... (insert the rest of the sentence here). My question is, if I use "when" in this case, am I supposed to use the past perfect or the past simple? Since I'm referring to something that someone did before I invited him to my house.
I.e, I invited him because when we had been/were at his house, we had been/were playing a game, and the idea had simply/ simply popped into my head.

The sequence of events is clear with just Simple Past. We usually don't use the Past Perfect if the sequence is clear.
