Grammar

Past perfect or present perfect

A couple of days ago I was eating at a friend's house when he suddenly started to choke on a piece of meat he had attempted to swallow. I've had/ I'd had first aid classes, so I was able to help him get through it.

Which one is grammatically correct?
In my opinion: I've had means that I want to express that I have had that experience in my life.

I'd had means that I want to emphasize that I had first aid classes before that ordeal.

Are they both correct?
