Past Perfect or Past Tense

Hi all,
Hi all, I encountered this sentence and don't understand why did they use past tense  instead of past tense: "I had been up all night trying to finish the presentation". Could you help me to understand it?
Thank you!

The past perfect refers to a time earlier than another past time. Perhaps the following morning somebody helped him finish it.
