Past perfect or past simple with because

You're telling a story that happened five years ago.

Why did you buy her that as a gift?

Because she wanted it. She told/had told me that she would love to have it. Are both tenses correct or only the past simple? Maybe "Because she wanted it" has already established the timeline so there's no need to use the past perfect (or it's impossible) ?
