Past perfect or Past simple after "as soon as?"

This is a question from my exercise book:
As soon as I had turned/turned the ignition key, the engine caught fire.
Which one is the correct answer?
The keys say turned but I think had turned is also acceptable.
What do you think?
Thank you.

Top answer

No, the past perfect does not really work here. Turning the key is not really a discrete event that precedes the fire; they occur one upon the other.
