I'm in two minds about what to choose.
1) I think the past perfect is okay because we're still talking about what happened before he got back.
2) I think the past simple is okay because I think it's okay to continue with the past simple after the past perfect is introduced.
Can I get some help, please?

I would use the past perfect, but my choice may be influenced by my native language, in which tenses are used more logically than in English. CB
