Past perfect or past simple?

Find and correct the mistake in the following sentence:

As soon as I met him, I knew I see him somewhere before.

My answer is:

As soon as I met him, I knew I SAW him somewhere before.

OR : As soon as I met him, I knew I HAD SEEN him somewhere before.

My friend says my first answer is wrong. Is he right? I would appreciate it if you gave me the correct answer.

We need past perfect, your friend's choice, because we refer to the time previous to another past action.

As soon as I met him, I knew I had seen him somewhere before.
