Past perfect or past simple

A couple of years ago, I was talking to my father, and I asked him how he had ended up marrying my mother.

1) They had met through a friend, and had decided to date.

2) They met through a friend, and decided to date.

Not sure if I should continue using the past perfect because of 'I asked him how he had ended up'. What's your take on this? Thanks.
