Past perfect or past simple

Context: I'm talking to a friend I haven't talked to in ages, we finish talking and a couple of hours later I send him a message saying: "It was nice hearing your voice. I hadn't heard it in a while. What made you/ had made you contact me?".

Am I supposed to use the past perfect or the past simple? Both seem fine to me.
