Past perfect or past simple

Hello! I know it would be correct to say:

- His grandmother had been ill for 5 years before she died.

But is there anything wrong with the following sentence:

- His grandmother was ill for 5 years before she died.

I mean consequence of events is still quite clear due to using of "before". Am I right?
