Past perfect or past simple

Why did you choose to study physics?
Had somebody told you that you were going to profit from it?
Did somebody tell you that you were going to profit from it?

Had or did? I guess had is correct but for some reason I feel as though native speakers don't usually use the past perfect with questions. I can honestly say that I have never heard them do so, at least.
