Past perfect or past simple

The Ottomans had a massive army, whereas the Serbs had a very small army. They fought in Kosovo and the battle was a draw. They had lost the same amount of soldiers but the Ottomans' army in general was bigger, so they didn't even need to recover. Did I use the past perfect properly or should it be "They lost the same amount"?
