Grammar

Past perfect or past simple

I cannot choose between these two sentences. My friends claim that I need to use the second one. I personally think that the first one is more appropriate. Please help me out.

1. Yesterday was a good day because nothing bad had happened.

2. Yesterday was a good day because nothing bad happened.

Thanks in advance!
