Past perfect or past simple ?

Hello,

I have fill in the blanks question on a comparison between past simple and past perfect tenses. I'm not sure about the blanks. I'm giving question with my answers. Can you comment on alternative answers if exist? Especially, for the second gap can we also use past simple tense for indicating a point in time?

"They told us, he ___had shot___(shoot) a tiger when he ____had been__(be) in safari.

Thanks,
