past perfect or past simple

Hello! How are you?
I just wanted to ask you a question!
i cannot understand 2 phrases (what to choose?)
They were happy when their son arrived\had arrived first.
We were disappointed when we heard\had heard thenews?
i would like to choose past Perfect . If not, why?

In each case, a native speaker will think of thee two events as simultaneous, and therefore not use Past Perfect. Clive.
