past perfect or past simple

have a look at this sentence please

they told me they found him hanging in his parent's house. He had used a climbing rope, tied so that he could pull himself up to the floor.

If I used past perfect for" had used" does it mean he wanted to committ suicide, is past perfect necessary here. It should be obvious that used tied are before the hanging. Would past perfect emphasize the connection between both sentences "he wanted to committ suicide".

thanks for answering

The 'suicide' meaning is still there with Past Simple. But you are right that Past Perfect adds some emphasis. How does one pull oneself up to the floor ?

No, it does not. Why would you think that?

No, that is not the function of past perfect at all. Simple past would work as well. Bu
