Past perfect or past continuous

Last Tuesday I went to the supermarket and saw John. Earlier that day, I was jogging/had been jogging and ran/had run into John's mom. What a coincidence!

Is it correct to say "ran" after had been jogging? If so, why? Is it natural? Thank you.

Also, would it be okay to just use the "was jogging" and "ran" instead of the past perfect?

Necrophagist Is it correct to say "ran" after had been jogging? Yes. Necrophagist why?

  • Necrophagist Is it correct to say "ran" after had been jogging?
  • Yes.
  • Necrophagist why?
  • Once you establish the time frame with the past perfect you don't have to keep using the past perfect again and again and again for every event that occurred within that time frame.
  • It's not wrong to do that, but it gets tiresome for the reader or listener to have all those 'had's in the text when just one (or maybe two in a longer passage) would do.
