Past perfect or past

Hi,

In this sentence, can I use either past perfect ot past tense?

He walked up to the rostrum with a smile. It was the sixth time he had won/won the game.

Can I? Since I think I read somewhere saying that both are possible.

Thanks.

Perhaps, but I much prefer the past perfect here.
