Past perfect of "When did she eat"

Hi all,
tonight at the table my wife asked: "She's not hungry. When did she last ate?".
I know that "ate" is wrong but I can't argue why. I know that the
  • present perfect is "has eaten"
  • past is "ate" or "did eat"
  • past perfect is "had eaten"
but how do I form the past perfect of "did eat"? Is there such a thing or not?
Thanks a lot,
Thomas

  • hey, there's no such a thing.

the past form of eat is ate. However, if you want to EMPHASIZE you can say did eat but this is not common.

    i.e: She sai

Remember we use past perfect when there is another event, also in the past, that comes after the event you are describing.
When she sat down to dinner, she was not very hungry, because she had eaten a very large lunch only a few hours before.
