Past Perfect necessity

Hi Everyone,

It's been a while but here I am, once again.

I would like to know what the REAL answer is to using the past perfect. We can use the simple past in so many situations. What is the BEST explanation to give a student who wants to know why we need the past perfect when the simple past will do for most of the time.

What's an example where the simple past WON'T do?

Thanks

Use the past perfect when the order of the past events is otherwise ambiguous. Also, use the past perfect—sparingly—for emphasis of the order of events.
