How can Past Perfect be explained in the sentence: "She had complained since May." or : ".He hadn't written a line since that day."
The only explanation I can suggest is putting imaginary 'I got to know that..." at the very beginning of the sentence. Otherwise I can explain it in no way or I can just put Present Perfect instead of Past Perfect.
