Past Perfect: had done..

Please help me figure these 2 sentences out..

Which one is correct:

- She wrote in her diary that she could not have become an athlete if her father had not

encouraged her like he did.

-or-

- She wrote in her diary that she could not have become an athlete if her father had not

encouraged her like he had done.

...like he had done seems odd.

with regard to the tense past perfect is all right.

I prefer this

She wrote in her diary that she could not have become an athlete if her father had not
given her such an encouragement.

Both are correct, but the first is better. I would use the first and end it "as he did" instead of "like he did".

Can you tell me whether the use of the phrase- as he did- in the context sounds natural?
