past perfect- grammar problem

Hello guys. I have worked really hard on my english for the past week but suddenly one small problem has caused my headache( just read the following sentence, please) :

My friends and I had come in the hope that by the end of the day we would be able to say we had walked across hot, burning coals.

Why is there past perfect and not just present simple ? I had been hoping to find the reason( somewhere in the grammar explanation) but I was unsuccessfull. Please help Emotion: smile

There must be something in the preceding text that is telling a story of something that happened in the past, for example, maybe that "my friends and I" were at some place where people walk across burning coals.
