Determine the correct order of the sentences in parentheses and use the past perfect or past perfect progressive to express the event that occurred first.
(My father beat me for the third time / I was afraid to stay there)
After my father beat me for the third time, I had been afraid to stay there.
(I made plans with a friend there for a long time / I left home)

Let's take a simpler example.
I'm working on my roof.
I try not to fall. Here, the 'not' relates to 'fall'. I'm trying to do a negative thing, ie 'not fall'.
