Past perfect continuous vs past perfect/past continuous

Hi!
Would anyone be able to help me out on the differences in the below sentences?
1. It had been snowing when I built a snowman.
2. It was snowing when I built a snowman.

3. It had been snowing.
4. It had snowed.

This is the most natural sentence for me: It was snowing when I built a snowman. If I had to use had been snowing , I would add something : It had been snowing for five hours when I built a snowman. CB
