Past Perfect Continuous and use of time reference

Good Saturday!

Due to the scarcity of employment opportunities, he had to retrain for designer and had for some time been subsequently engaged in decoration and interior design.

1. Is the use of time references correct here?

2. Does the sentence sound natural?

I'm so sorry for my absent-mindedness, which has led to the wrong header! Forgot to shift it to "Past Perfect Passive" after I had done that to the sentence.
