past perfect and/or simple past

I think this sentence is correct, isn't it?

"They had been very rich in England but in 1844 they had to leave the country and lost all their money."

But can I also use the simple past? "They were very rich in England but in 1844 they had to leave the country and lost all their money." Or is that wrong?
