Past Perfect and Past tense

Hello, I'm confused with the difference of meaning when I use past perfect tense and past tense. In the sentence below, which one is correct?

1. I've just read "Puppy", a short story written by George Saunders that had been published in New Yorker.
2. I've just read "Puppy", a short story written by George Saunders that was published in New Yorker.

I don't know there are such a rule. And in my case, it's not a trial to bump my question. I only intended to add some polite word like "please" and "thank you"
