past perfect and past tense

is there any difference between these two sentences ?

I lost the book my father gave me.

I lost the book my father had given me.

Not much, if any-- here, the past perfect seems unnecessary. Use it only when there is some confusion about the time order of the past events, or if you wish to emphasize the precedence of one.
