Past perfect and past simple

Which is preferable:

Soon after they left ( or: HAD LEFT) the harbour, a severe storm began ???

Or both variants can be used depending on what you are interested in: sequence of events (past perfect) or rapid changes in description of the events (past simple) ???

Top answer

Yes, both are possible. But the Simple Past is often used when words like 'after' make the seqence of events clear.
