Would you tell me if this original sentence is grammatical?

A hundred and fifty years after England planted tiny settlements at Jamestown and Plymouth, the American colonies had grown up and wanted to be independent.?H.S. Commager, The First Book of Amer. History.


I have a feeling the following seems to be right.
A hundred and fifty years after England had planted tiny settlements at Jamestown and Plymouth, the American colonies grew up and wanted to be independent.
