Hi,
Can someone advice to me if the past perfect is necessary here, or not (I'm talking about when I was a little kid, so around 2005).
1. I thought Napoleon lived an interesting life.
2. I thought Napoleon had lived an interesting life.
The rules say #2 should be used. But if everyone knows for sure thing that I am talking about 2005, it should be obvious that Napoleon came before me, no?
Can I use the simple past in this situation, is my question.
Thank you.
anonymous Can I use the simple past in this situation, is my question. Yes. It's quite common to substitute the past for the past perfect when the time sequence is clear with just the past.
