Past perfect

So I was looking through my workbook and I noticed that there was a sentence saying. ''We had never been there before.'' But from school, i learned that in a sentence we use HAD when there is a past moment before another past moment. I know that We have never been there before is correct as well but please tell me when do i have to use had and have in sentences like the ones from above. Could someone clear this up for me cuz I am confused.
