Past perfect

Which sentence is correct? ? He had lived here since he was 10. OR ? He had lived here since he had been 10. (3) It had been ten years since Captain Smith saw Lieutenant Tim. OR (4) It had been ten years since Captain Smith had seen Lieutenant Tim. Thanks
