How can Past Perfect be explained in the sentence;
She had naturally assumed, that once there was a theatre everybody would want to go. ??????
If I were the author of the sentence mentioned above, I would put;
"She naturally assumed, that once there had been a theater everybody wanted (or would want - if the regularity of the action is very important) to go.' or :
'She naturally assumed that once there would be a theatre everybody would want to go."
The only explanation I can suggest is putting imaginable context ;'I got to know, that at last SHE HAD NATURALLY ASSUMED.........." Am I right?
olive bee She had naturally assumed, that once there was a theatre everybody would want to go. As far as can be said with no further context, it implies that some event in the past changed that assumption. "had assumed" prevailed up until that time, then stopped.
