Past perfect

Thank you for helping me carry that heavy wardrobe to my room yesterday. I had tried to do it by myself, but I couldn't.

Was I right to use the past perfect here?

I agree with Clive. You could use the perfect, but it is not really necessary here since the anterior (past) meaning is conveyed by the context.
