Past perfect

Hi Everyone,

I'd like to know how to best explain the following sentence:

'Jerry had picked up his girlfriend before stopping at the supermarket.'

We usually use the past perfect to talk about 2 events in the past etc.

So, how would you explain my sentence above?

or, would you best say that the sentence should read:

'Jerry picked up his girlfriend before stopping at the supermarket.'

Thanks
