Grammar

Past Perfect

1. "The building was evacuated after they found/had found one suspected thing"

2. "I had/had had so much respect for him before I read about him. "

Which are correct ? Actually I am very confused. While learning more about tenses, I have recenlty come across we have to use past perfect if any event happens before another past event. So in both of the sentences, past perfect seems to be the grammatical way to say it. Isn't it ? But most people uses simple past instead of past perfect. I am a bit lost here. I would be glad if you can clear my doubts on these. Thank you!

Here you can use either. The use of after does not make the use of past perfect mandatory it makes the sequence of actions clear.

The same holds good for the second sentence as well.

@vsuresh could you give me some examples where "only past perfect" tense is the grammatical and can not use simple past ? and explain it why if possible. Please. Thank you!
