Past Perfect

So, I know that we use Past Perfect to describe an action that had happened in the past before another action in the past...but can we use Past Perfect when there was only ONE action in the past? Say, I was chatting with someone, but I fell asleep. The next morning, can I say "Sorry, I had fallen asleep"?
Or should it be "Sorry, I fell asleep"?
