Past perfect

Hello

I woke up suddenly at 8:00 a bit anxious. My parents were coming back from their holydays . they should arrive around 8:15.
In fact I had arranged to meet them , but as I had been moving furniture all day , I was only thinking of going to bed and sleep. So I had forgotten to set the alarm..
Here is my question could" had forgotten " be changed into" forgot". I think as it is one of the main reason to feel anxious and this event happened before waking up, it was better to use past perfect.
What do you think of it?Am I right ?

Could you let me know if there are other mistake

Thanks for your answer

Note that we leave a space after, not before, a punctuation mark.
