PAST PERFECT,

Happy Refugees played several shows with the same line up, finally playing the last time in may1983.

PJ and I returned to the Stoke on Trent area in the summer of 1983. We got together a new five piece line up of Happy Refugees with a complete new set of songs. PJand I finally played together as a duo
under the name of Happy Refugees late in 1986.

Every band has a shelf life. Happy refugees had finally expired. We always felt excluded in many ways: we always played as it was our last show, we always felt like we were waiting for our aaudience.

Here is my question , why past perfect for"had finally expired". Is it because the author warn us that all the reader is going to read in this paragraph, takes place before the split. The author does the backshift
only for the first verb of the paragraph but we must undestand that all the paragrap is before the split even if the other verbs are past simple. This paragraph is a flash back

It's used in this way to indicate the event occurred at a specific point in time (the past) whereas the rest of the paragraph describes events that were ongoing in the past.

First thanks for answering but I don't agree with you because " we always ......." happened when the band was still alive before they expired . It is because they did not have the recognition they deserved that they split.
So first" they always........." then they split or expired so expired came after : so why past perfect for this one as it happened after and not before
