I saw that in a test, answered "used to play and had been" but in fact the correct answer was used to play was. Why "had been" is not possible, grand pa is obviously before me: so past perfect or i s it because it is obviously before that past perfect is not needed Yes But 'had been' is not incorrect. Just not commonly used if obvious.
