past perfect

This is the exemple Califjim took to explain the usage of past perfect

"I remember getting caught in a rainstorm years ago. I was driving home from work when the car broke down. Though it looked like it was about to rain, I decided to walk home since it was only a mile and a half from the car. As it turned out, I only had to walk a half mile in the downpour because I had walked a mile before it began raining."

But as there is before would it be possible to use past simple and to write because I walked a mile before it began raining as I saw in this forum that when there is before , after past perfect is optional

thank you for your answer

Ok sorry for my writing

But why would you use past perfect if the past simple is possible?, Isn't it simpler to use past simple ? What do you loose in term of meaning when you use past simple in that case?
Hope this time my question is clearer than last time?

Thanks for your answer

Here are a couple more examples to consider, that may help you.

eg Tom came home at 6 pm yesterday His wife cooked dinner. To a native speaker, this means she cooked dinner after 6 pm.
