Grammar

past perfect

Is this correct

I bought a record.I played it to death till I was 16 . Then I forgot it and had not played it for 3 years when yesterday I put it on my turntable and felt as if I was 16 again.
Or shall I write
I had bought a record. I had played it to death till I was 16.Then I had forgotten it and had not played for 3 years when yesterday I put it on my turntable and felt it as I was 16 again

Think first one is better

In my opinion, both clauses should be in past perfect and may be better written as: I had forgotten and not played it for 3 years until yesterday when I put it on my turntable.....
Just my take.

yes

but the order of action is respected

1 I bought
2 I played
3 Forgot
4 hadn 't played

That is why I did not used past perfect for forgot

No, that is not what I meant.

but the order of action is respected

1 I bought
2 I played
3 Forgot
4 hadn 't played
We don't want the whole passage in past perfect. That 'd be over killed

grammarfreakThe most common mistconception with learners in using past perf. is that they tend to overuse it. If the context can be expressed in simple past clearly and causes no chronological confusion, it is better to use simple past tense, generally speaking.
Quite.

I bought a record. I played it to death till
