Past Perfect

Hello, me and my girlfriend have an argument, can a native English speaker solve it for us please? The problem is with the use of past perfect tense. How is it correct to say:

"I tested it before posting" or
"I had tested it before posting"

As they stand, the second is emphatic; otherwise, past perfect is not called for because 'before' orders the events nicely without it.
