past perfect

dear teacher

Is my text correct

I made a payment for a record that had already been sold out. Then 2 weeks after I made a new order. But as I had forgotten I had paid for the last one I made a new payment.

Did I choose the correct tense especially for past perfect?
Was it possible to write

But as I forgot I had paid for the last one , I made a new payment .
Pretty sure we could but what is the best?

Thanks for your answer

They're both correct, but the second one is the better read. Multiple past perfects in the same sentence tend to be cumbersome, and not much fun to read or listen to. I look at the past perfect as an optional tool for clarifying complex sequences.
