hello dear teachers

I found this sentence, and I dont understand the use of past perfect

If someone was trying to put the frighteners on us, they had succeed. We were scared.

FIRS EVENT IS PUT THE FRIGHTENERs
SECOND EVENT SUCCEED
THIRD EVENT SCARED

So in the sentenceif if you use past perfect the order is

first event succeed
second event to put the frighteners
third event scared

I agree with you first event scare tactic ,second success , third scared
So would it be possible to write
If they had put the frighteners on us, they had succeeded. We were scared.
In this case does it mean that the scare tactic was over ?and it was not we were scared but they still were trying to terrify us, that is why we have past continous
Am I right?

I think you might be confusing the third conditional, which is an unreal situation in the past:

If they had (tried to) put the frighteners on us, they would have succeeded. (The didn't and we were not scared.)

In this next version, someone, but we don't know who, put the frighteners on them, and were successful at scaring them. We
