PAST PERFECT

If somebody could explain why the past perfect is used

Dear Friends
On behalf of The Lost Domain family, it is with great sadness we mark the passing earlier today of our dear friend and bandmate David Mac Kinnon.

David had bravely battled cancer these past couple of years and is now finally at peace.

I dont understand why past perfect is used for battle. Is it because we can add
David had bravely battled cancer these past couple but he died .It is not written but that is what the author means and why he chooses the past perfect .

Thank you for your answer
