and

Grammar books generally list both as the pp, however, the way they are used seems different to me:

have + got carries the meaning of "have/own"

while

have + gotten is used in all other cases

So, we would say "what have you got in your hand?"

but

"If your parent hadn't gotten divorced..."

No, both are past perfect. 'Gotten' is a form of the past participle 'got', and is a feature of USA English.



I think 'have gotten' typically means 'have recently got'.
