Past perfect?

Is it correct to say like

I would only send money once we had been paid.

once we had been paid - confuses me here.

WHat about - I would pay - in this case? Doesn't it refer to the Present or Future Tenses? It turns out that the first part of the sentense says about the Present (Future) and the second about the Past...... is it ok?

Whould it be better just to say

I would pay once we are paid

I "would" is past, we "Are" is present. I would pay once we were paid.
